Endless possibilities

"What does she have that I don't?" demanded Kaylie, her voice echoing in the silence of her room. What is wrong? Why does she get the attention? And how, how can she get things easily when I take years to get people to notice? She angrily thought to herself.

Her best friend, Stephanie, just told her that a guy liked her. Not just any guy. The guy that Kaylie thought was perfect with her. They got along so well, understood each other on levels where no one else could comprehend, making inside jokes - ultimately, making her feel special and needed, one of a kind. Now, Stephanie confessed that she liked him a while back. With this next bombshell, Kaylie's foundation rocked and cracked. Will he forget me? What about our connection? Will someone else replace the bond that I thought could never be broken?

Kaylie had slammed the phone on Stephanie, mind shutting down, drowning out everything else but the sound of her own voice, filled with doubt. Tears streamed down her face as she realized, maybe, she actually hoped for more than that special connection with him. She thought that maybe, things could move forward, since they hit it off so well.

But now, she is alone. Scrolling through her phone book, trying to figure out whether there was anyone that could help lighten her pain, but got nowhere.

Then, she paused at his name. Her fingers were tempted to press 'call' but her conscious was putting on a big fight. The next thing she knew, his voice filled the silent room.

"Hey! I was just about to call you. I really need to tell you something serious. Seriously." He joked, but the tone of his voice told her that he was trying to lighten the situation that he was afraid might hurt her. With the silence that filled the line, he continued saying that he had developed feelings for Stephanie, and that he was sorry it took him this long to tell her. He knew that she would have found out earlier, or at least known something was going on but he didn't know how to assess the situation. He didn't want to upset her. "Are you alright with this?" he ended. She sighed and said that it didn't matter what she thought. If he loves Stephanie, she has no authority stopping anything from happening.

A while back, Stephanie was telling her how much he meant to her. And Kaylie asked, "Why didn't you tell me earlier?" The reply was curt and every syllable was left to resonate in her heart, shaking the very fibre of her being. "I was giving you signs that he liked me. But you didn't pick up on the hints."Every word stabbed her heart, twisting and hurting her very core.

At that point, Kaylie wanted to yell at her that she didn't need Stephanie rubbing salt into the wound. Was it necessary to tell her all the sweet memories that they enjoyed together? Was it important to know what he had shared with Stephanie? That it was obvious that Kaylie's role would have been done. There was nothing left that he needed her for, once Stephanie got into the picture.

She sighed and slid to the ground in defeat. There was no winning this battle. Maybe she has to accept the fact that things have changed.

The next day, while Kaylie was talking to Stephanie, he walked up to them, and as a greeting, he tried to break the ice with one of his jokes, hoping to get a laugh out of Kaylie. Even as the joke was being said, Kaylie knew that it was meant for her, but somehow, she couldn't even manage a smile. There was a barrier, blocking her from him. And for a brief moment, Kaylie could have sworn that she saw a flicker of panic pass his eyes when he noticed her guard. After some polite answers, she had to get out of there before those familiar tears stream down her face again.

"I really don't know what to do anymore." Maybe she had to admit that whatever special bond she had with the both of them have been severed. Maybe she had to take a deep breath and move on. Maybe she had to let go of the doubt that told her that she shouldn't have trusted Stephanie in the first place. Maybe one day, she might be able to forgive them.

Why am I so hurt? Shouldn't I be happy for him..? She groaned with the pain that has been brewing inside her for a couple of months and gave in to defeat. She was battling this thought for months. Why was it appearing now? But then...

Maybe, just maybe, deep down, she knew he was the one. Maybe, just maybe, things might get better.

Or maybe, it wouldn't.
